Austin was chosen as one of four pilot cities for the $1 Coin. The US Mint is hoping to make Austinites aware of the benefits of regularly using the $1 Coin.
When we use the $1 Coin, we are making a difference for our country. The coin is durable unlike the paper dollar bill, so it saves the Nation billions of dollars in the long run. It lasts for decades and is 100% recyclable.
Austin was chosen because it is known as a unique, yet all-American city. Upcoming events in the Austin area will encourage Austinites to appreciate the benefits of the $1 Coin.
The other three pilot cities are Portland, OR; Charlotte, NC; and Grand Rapids, MI.
$1 coins have been a part of our currency for many decades, but they have not been widely used. The US Mint issues four Presidential $1 Coins per year. They have minted more than one billion new $1 Coins since 2007.
You can visit www.usmint.gov for more information on the Presidential $1 Coin Program. They even offer a site for kids! http://www.usmint.gov/kids/

I don't like this. I don't carry a purse. I carry my license, a credit card, and a $20 in my back pocket. I don't like to carry things in my front pockets. If I had to use a $1 coin, my front pockets would get bunchie, and I wouldn't like that... the coin would get thrown in the coin jar with the rest.
Donna just said "bunchie"
I despise coins as well & Austinites sounds like a "BUG"
Donna-They are still about the size of a quarter! Since a dollar is in value about what a quarter used to be....Doesn't bother me. Plus they won't get torn up in the washer!
Greg-Houstonians sound like old antiques... LOL! Donna is pretty slim..won't take much for her get a bunchie...But the guys...they are probably going to start carrying rolls of them in their pocket! LOL!
I like it !!!
Being born and raised in Austin, TX I happen to be very patriotic about this idea, and would probably carry a few around in each pocket for nostalgia sake !
... no not a ROLL of them Sherry ;o)
Sheldon-I could tell by the accent you were born and raised here! Cheerio-Y'all!!
BUt do you know where the word "bunchie" comes from? It's harder to know without hearing the word said as it was said on the show a lot... it's one of our fabulous 80's sitcoms.
Donna-I don't know what show it was from...Sounds like something Phoebe would have been said on Friends. But I think a bunchie was the original name for a crunchie (for the hair).
Morning, Sherry:
Last December, it took me days to find the dollar coins to include in the St. Nicolas's Day treat we left out for our daughters. I finally went to the Post Office, stood in line, then asked Postal Employee Todd, "Where can I get dollar coins?" I had to buy stamps from one of their vending machines to get them! The girls were extra delighted as they thought they were Gold. Plus, they don't understand how little a dollar buys you yet!
And wasn't a Bunchie a brand name of Crunchie? :)
First, the things in your hair are scrunchies with an S at the beginning. Second, the TV show is Family Ties. Mallory is all about fashion and design, and she would always ask if this or that looked bunchie.
Michael- I got 3 out of the water machine at the airport. For something they are trying to use, they sure are hard to find!
Donna- Girl Scout Bunchie And if you google bunchie it is some cartoon green thing... You have a good memory of Family Ties! I had totally forgotten about that show!
I have seen this coins in the DFW area. Pretty cool.
Sherry,
I think it is going to be a hard sale, much like the Susan B Anthony dollar coin.
John-They are sharp looking!
Richard-I am surprised they don't do away with the paper dollar to force the issue. I think it is because it is something different...and cash drawers are not set up for them. But I wouldn't really have an issue to the change over to it if it saves all that money in the long run.
