New Year’s Day. Most of us have heard about eating black eyed peas for luck. But my grandma taught me… you have to eat collard greens for money.
Absolutely nothing should leave your home on New Year's Day, including you, until a man has stepped foot in your home before you step foot outside your home. You may want to have a family member or friend visit you on New Year's Day to break the threshold of your doorway before you go anywhere on the first. Beware though, it's said that it should be a man, not a woman, and that blondes and redheads are bad omens. Otherwise you will be paying out or giving out all year long.
Also, don’t loan money on New Year’s Day either, or you will be loaning money all year. You aren’t supposed to pay off any loans on this day either. (It’s probably a good thing most places are closed!)
Don’t wash clothes, or someone will die in the household with the year.
And you are supposed to do some work, so you will have work all year.
Open your windows at midnight on New Years Eve to let the old year out and the New Year in.
Don’t cry and don’t break anything. Well, that is all I can remember. (But that is a lot to remember!) I think I am going to have a busy day tomorrow… but I better go get my laundry done quick!

Sherry - Quite interesting and "Happy New Year!"
Sherry, these are quite cool. I hadn't heard of any of them. Happy New Year to you in Austin. May it be a blessed year for you.
OMG as the 16 yr. old daughter say at our house! I am a fan of all kinds of food and especially southern cooking but have a hard time with "collard's". the more I chew the larger the bite seems to get! I have heard that Nubian Queen Lola's on the east side does a good job with them so maybe I will check that out!
Best of the New Year to you!
Robert-Happy New Year!
Gary-Thank you and Happy New Year to you also!
Russell-Collards are good and very tender if prepared correctly. I specialize in "White Trash Cookin"! Happy New Year!
I never heard of this New Year superstitions. I guess this going to be a bad year for me. I gave my kid brother a small loan, washing my clothes, laying around all day in PJ, did not open my windows on New Years eve, substitute my collard greens for spinach, and broke my favorite coffee cup is morning.
Sherry you should have post this a week prior from today, its your fault I'm going to have a great 2009 year.
Happy New Years to you.
~ Life is Good
P.S. I'm not superstitions.
Sherry I think I've broken half theese rules. Oh well we'll see how 2009 goes anyway. lol.
Sherry you are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too funny. Happy New Year friend. And oh my goodness, today is Saturday, wehre did Friday go?
Nancy-Exactly! I noticed about 10.30 pm...and thought "Cricky!-It's Friday!" I am slipping in my old age! That and I haven't recovered from all the holiday travel.
Sherry, We do the first foot program in our family where I go outside just before midnight. I do it because its tradition not because I enjoy standing outside at midnight in freezing weather...
Sherry, OMG, I'm sorry I read this~I think I did laundry on New Years....I'll try to ignore your doom. Happy 2009 to you my friend....now take that back!
Hugs, Deb
Y-U-C-K! Man, that's gross looking! I love spinach though..
Paul-I had my husband open the door and do the same this year.
Deb-No, the washer did the laundry..we just threw some dirty clothes at it! It's not like we had to boil water, scrub the clothes on the wash board and such like they did back when this was made up. (That works for me!)
Greg-Spinach is stronger tasting that collard greens. But I have yet to find any goods ones at a restuarant. Green is for money anyway...so you are good with spinach.
I had head of most of these, but not all. We did have black-eyed peas and turnip greens (I like them better than collard). I had heard about the washing clothes, but not the man entering the doorway.
Pam-I like all the greens...I think the main thing is eating something green. Have a great 2009!
